How to use the breakout rooms feature

Written by Tristan Bell

Breakout rooms allow you to divide participants into smaller groups within a session. This can be useful for discussions, group work, or smaller focus blocks. This can be useful for discussions, group work, smaller focus blocks, or optional breaks (e.g. stretching or dancing).

Only a community session host can start and control a breakout rooms in custom created community sessions.

The toggle for Breakout rooms can be found under section 3: Additional settings - Advanced in the custom session builder

Start a breakout session

In your session, open the menu (⋯) Select Breakout

Choose:

  • Create a new breakout session, or

  • Recreate last breakout session

Set up your rooms

There are two separate things happening when setting up breakout rooms:

1. How many rooms

  • Use the + / – controls to set how many rooms you want

  • The interface will show how many participants per room

2. How people are assigned to rooms

  • Assign automatically → participants are distributed evenly across rooms

  • Assign manually → you choose which participants go into each room (either by dragging them or using the dropdown to select a room)

3. How people enter rooms

  • If “participants join automatically” is ON → participants are moved into rooms automatically

  • If OFF → participants are given the option to join the room themselves

Even if you assign someone to a room, they will still have a choice to join unless automatic joining is enabled.

Start the breakout

Once rooms are set up:

  • Participants will either:

    • Be moved automatically, or

    • See a prompt to Join their assigned room

During the breakout session

As a host, you can:

  • Move between rooms to check in

  • Adjust room assignments if needed

  • Monitor who is in each room

  • End breakout rooms immediately

  • End breakout rooms with a 60 second buffer

Participants can:

  • Return to the main room

  • Leave the call

The session chat is separate from breakout rooms, so you can’t send messages only to participants in a breakout room.

Moving between breakout rooms (hosts)

Hosts need to assign themselves to a room in order to join it.

To enter a breakout room:

  1. Select your own name

  2. Assign yourself to the desired room

  3. Click “Assign changes”

  4. Join the room

You can repeat this process to move between rooms.

Ending the breakout session

To end the session:

  1. Open the breakout controls

  2. Choose:

    • End in 60 seconds → participants get a warning

    • End immediately → everyone returns instantly

If set to end in 60 seconds, participants will be notified:

How to leave a breakout room as a participant

To leave a breakout room and return to the main session:

  1. Click Return to Main room

  2. You’ll be moved back to the main room immediately

If you want to leave the call entirely, click Leave call instead

If you leave the session while in a breakout room, you won’t automatically rejoin that breakout room when you return.

Recreate a previous setup

You can reuse a previous room setup by selecting:

  • Recreate last breakout session

This keeps the same room structure and assignments.
